Victoria joined Affinity Trust in 2015 as one of our two Directors of Operations and Quality. She is responsible for our operations in Scotland, the Midlands, and Central, North and North West England.
Why did you join Affinity Trust?
I was inspired the very first time I came into contact with people who work for Affinity Trust. The mission statement and values are real and very quickly I saw people emulating the values. The people we support are at the very heart of what we do. I quickly decided I wanted to be part of such an organisation and make a difference.
What did you do before?
Before joining Affinity Trust I mainly worked in senior management positions in local authorities across all adult services, in both commissioning and provider services.
I was involved in safeguarding, joint working with health, and managing adult social work, intermediate care and occupational therapy services. I then gained extensive experience mainly with a charitable organisation that provided health, housing and social care services for older people.
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
When at home it’s Angus, my bearded collie. If I’m away, it’s the hotel breakfast! But seriously, it’s the work I do, being presented with different challenges and opportunities on a daily basis. And focusing on sharing and shaping good practice to ensure better support and outcomes for people with learning disabilities and their families. It’s why I started my career in social care more than 25 years ago.
What does your work involve?
Overseeing budgets, facilitating sustainable growth opportunities and managing risks across five of our divisions – Scotland, the Midlands, and Central, North and North West England.
Making sure we meet all statutory requirements, while consistently innovating and emulating best practices.
Ensuring people are safe, but also encouraging positive risk-taking to maximise their independence.
Making sure we are providing quality support consistently and enabling people to meet their chosen outcomes.
I also manage our learning and development and internal recording systems. These store details about our staff and the people we support and also track Affinity Trust’s quality measures.
What do you like most about your job?
The variety. No two days are ever the same. I love being able to make a difference to the lives of the people we support. In making that difference it is also about valuing, supporting and rewarding our staff and managers. I work with the most committed and inspiring teams. Everyone really wants to do their best. It’s a breath of fresh air and I never take it for granted.
