Englefield Garden Centre
Affinity Trust has a strong reputation for creating innovative projects offering adults with learning disabilities the opportunity to enhance life skills and gain work placements.
Located on Englefield Estate near Reading, and managed by Affinity Trust, Englefield Garden Centre is the home of such a project.
Englefield grows more than 100,000 plants a year. But it is a thriving garden centre in more ways than one:
-
It is a self-sustaining social enterprise that operates without funding grants or subsidies.
-
Nearly half the permanent workforce are adults with learning disabilities.
-
It runs horticultural workshops for people with learning disabilities. These engage people in horticultural activities that promote improved health and wellbeing, and increased confidence and interpersonal skills.
The centre is always looking to further develop voluntary placements, work experience and paid employment.
The people we support take on a range of tasks, including the development of the centre’s plants and helping the garden centre meet the needs of an increasing customer base.
