Leeds opportunities service: video transcript
Emma Carrington, opportunities manager:
This is the Leeds opportunities service. We support adults with learning disabilities in and around the Leeds area. So we’re here to support people to achieve goals. We will make plans with people about what they want to achieve and we will look at ways of doing that.
We support people to attend various activities and sporting events, which will increase their physical activity. Some people don’t get a lot of opportunity to engage in those sorts of activities.
So we do support people on a regular basis to attend a ping-pong session every week. It’s absolutely brilliant, the guys who go there, they absolutely love it.
Joseph:
I love ping-pong because I want to see my friends. Everybody loves it. I mean Sheena, Sheena tells me I’m a ping-pong king.
Emma Carrington:
People come here as often as they need to. We’re looking at what people want to actually achieve.
Ben:
I do woodwork, I do computers and I do a bit of art. It’s crafting, I get good at crafting, it’s just building, it’s just building stuff.
Emma Carrington:
We’re actually looking at goals that people want to achieve and what they want to get out of visiting our service. So you’ve seen Debora making cakes this morning. She’s got really really into that recently. She’s really creative, getting stuck in and getting those cakes made.
Debora:
I’ve been making cakes. We’ve been baking a sugar glass. We’ve been using sugar and water. We’re going to smash it as hard as we can. It’s a Halloween cake. And we’re going to put all sorts in. I really enjoy the baking. I really enjoy the ingredients. The most thing I enjoy is mixing in. It’s been a lot of fun. It makes me feel happy and I’m really excited.
